AFS implements a single-image filespace for all users with no location dependencies. To accessany file on the network, refer to the file by name, which is the same forall users. This location transparency greatly simplifies the use andadministration of a large number of machines on a distributed network.AFS handles very large numbers of users and workstations without loss ofperformance. AFS design features ensure that network traffic is kept toa minimum. Replication and online backup techniques result in littleinterruption of file services to users. For security, AFS uses Kerberosauthentication and access control lists.
